Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Perinatal Mental Health Project

Working together to support women in the perinatal period.

The Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Perinatal Mental Health Project is a partnership between Peninsula Health, Peninsula General Practice Network (PGPN), and the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Maternal and Child Health Services. The aim of the project is to ensure that service providers work together to provide optimal support for women in the perinatal period.

The goal of the Project is to implement universal routine screening of all women in the perinatal period for mental health issues and to significantly improve the communication and referral pathways.

The Perinatal Mental Health Project is informed by the National Perinatal Depression Initiative and the Beyond Blue Clinical Practice Guidelines (Feb 2011). The guidelines recommend using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Screen (EPDS) tool to screen for depression and anxiety symptoms at least once in both the antenatal and postnatal period.

Pathways and protocols have been developed for the partnership group and training is in the process of being rolled out. Routine screening using the EPDS has commenced in the Peninsula Health Antenatal clinics and Maternal Child Health Services.
