The Continence Service treats children and adults with bladder and bowel issues. It includes a medical clinic with diagnostic urodynamics studies, nursing and physiotherapy multidisciplinary clinic, consultant paediatric and urogynaecology clinic.
Referral Process
Referral addressed to named head of clinic is preferred.
The GP Referral Template located within the PH intranet or ACCESS system is the preferred referral tool.

Eligibility Criteria
- Children 3 years and above and adults with bowel issues. Children 5 years and above and adults with bladder issues. Adults with pelvic floor dysfunction are also eligible. Medical clinic with diagnostic Urodynamics studies, Nursing and physio multidisciplinary clinic, consultant Paediatric and Urogynaecology clinics. SWEP funding – washable continence products, Intermittent self catheter equipment
- CAPS funding – continence items which could include disposable items
- DVA
Exclusion Criteria

- NDIS Adults: NDIS continence physiotherapists – the CFA (below) NDIS continence nurses – the CFA (below)
- Clients with a Home Care Package (Level 4): Case manager/carer to seek therapy through private providers

- Clients who live out of the catchment area
Exceptions
Monash Children’s Paediatric Continence Clinic do not consider referrals until the child is 5 years of age for daytime wetting or 7 years of age in the event of night wetting or children with only soiling issues – these where appropriate should go to the general paediatrician or to Paediatric Gastro Medicine
The Royal Children Children’s Hospital do not see children with faecal issues under the age of 5

If they want help with continence refer them to service to be put on the wait list, but advise them they could ask GP to apply for CAPS in the meantime

Referral: Date of referral, Speciality, Referring practitioner, Provider Number, Referrer’s signature.
Patient Demographic: Full name, Date of birth, Postal address, Contact numbers, Medicare Number, Interpreter required.
Clinical: Reason for referral, Duration of symptoms, Management to date, Past medical history, Current medications, Allergies
Diagnostics: as per referral guideline X-ray results/reports must be within the last 6 months
