Electroencephalography (EEG) Clinic

EEG testing assesses electrical brain waves in the diagnosis and characterisation of epilepsy and other conditions that mimic epilepsy.

Adult clinic > 16 years (outpatient and inpatient)

Paediatric clinic 2-15 years (outpatient only)

Eligibility Criteria

  • Patients aged over 2 years
  • Patients must be referred by a doctor
  • Adult Video EEG monitoring (VEM) patients must be referred by a neurologist
  • Peninsula Health Catchment preferred

Exclusion Criteria

  • Children under 2 years
  • Paediatric prolonged/inpatient studies
    • Services provided at Monash Children’s Hospital or The Royal Children’s Hospital
  • VEM requests without prior EEG investigations
  • VEM requests where patient is unable/not suitable to stay in hospital for 5-day monitoring duration
    • Consider home-based ambulatory studies at sites such as Monash Health or Alfred Health
    • Home-based Video EEG service provided by Seer Medical

Other information

Referral should be faxed directly to the department by the referring doctor so it may be submitted for triage. Patients are not immediately booked in for appointments due to extensive waitlists. It may take up to two months before notification of an appointment is made. Patients will be notified of an appointment via SMS, phone call, or letter.

Referral: Date of referral, Clinic name, Referring practitioner, Provider Number, Referrer’s signature.

Patient Demographic: Full name, Date of birth, Postal address, Contact numbers, Medicare Number, Interpreter required.

Clinical: Reason for referral, Duration of symptoms, Management to date, Past medical history, Current medications
