Tootgarook Primary: Learning on the Move!

Children walking to school

At Tootgarook Primary School, learning is anything but sitting still! The school has made physical activity a huge part of everyday life, turning classrooms into spaces where movement fuels education.

Active Classrooms with a Twist

Teachers at Tootgarook use the Transform Us program to make lessons fun and active. We’re talking about lessons with movement built in, regular brain breaks, and even homework that gets kids moving. The result? Students are more focused, engaged, and excited to learn. It’s a win-win!

Beach Days Are Learning Days

One of the school’s biggest assets? It’s just a short walk from beautiful Capel Sound Beach! This natural wonder becomes an outdoor classroom where students dive into science, math, and even social and emotional learning. Whether they’re studying marine life or working on team building, the beach is a favourite ‘classroom’ for hands-on learning.

Pedal Power: Bike Education for All

Biking is a big deal at Tootgarook. From the littlest preps to the grade 6’s, bike education is woven into the curriculum. Kids learn about bike safety, mechanics, and even how cycling can help the environment. It’s about building skills they’ll use for life.

Active Paths: Walking and Riding to School

Through the Active Paths project, Tootgarook is getting students and families excited about walking and biking to school. And the best part? The students themselves have a say in how it all works, giving them ownership of the journey.

Recognition for Getting Kids Moving

All this hard work paid off when Tootgarook was recently recognised for hitting the Physical Activity and Movement Benchmark of the Achievement Program. With support from Peninsula Health, the school is being celebrated for making movement a natural part of everyday learning.

Principal Leigh McQuillen sums it up perfectly, “Engaging students to learn through movement and play is central to our philosophy at Tootgarook. Our students are excited about learning.” Kristen Young from Peninsula Health adds, “It’s great to see the school getting recognised for all they’re doing.”

Tootgarook Primary is proving that when you get kids moving, you get them learning too!
