Faces of Peninsula Health: Cindy Siggs

Committed to advocating for patients with cancer, Clinical Nurse Specialist Cindy Siggs is helping ensure they receive the best care and support throughout their treatment journey.

“After completing my university studies, I found myself unsure about which career path to pursue,” shares Cindy. “When the chance to join Peninsula Health presented itself, I embraced it and had the opportunity to work across different specialty areas.”

Since starting with Peninsula Health, Cindy has done it all, working as a Registered Nurse in emergency, respiratory, surgical, rehabilitation, aged, and palliative care, before discovering her deep passion for oncology, specialising in lung cancer.

“Lung cancer patients often face stigma and unique challenges,” she says. “I am deeply committed to advocating for these patients, ensuring they receive the best care and support throughout their treatment journey.”

Taking on the Lung Cancer Care Coordinator role, Cindy acts as a central point of contact for patients with lung cancer, and attends to the physical, emotional, social, and psychological requirements of both patients and caregivers.

“Dealing with the challenges of cancer treatment can be overwhelming,” she says.

“Many lung cancer patients experience symptoms like breathlessness, nausea, fatigue, constipation, and hair loss. I provide support with information on medications, dietary guidance, and exercise recommendations. Chemotherapy can also take a toll on patients’ emotional well-being. It’s normal for patients to feel anxious or depressed, and I offer support and resources to help them navigate these feelings.”

“I had an incredibly meaningful experience as a lung cancer care coordinator in oncology.”

“I had the privilege of assisting a young man as he faced his cancer diagnosis, making sure he had access to thorough care and support. It was truly heart-warming to witness the positive effects of our coordinated efforts and to feel the deep appreciation from the family,” shares Cindy.

“The support and teamwork from my colleagues really keep me motivated. We all work together to provide the best care we can, and their hard work inspires me.”

This year, Peninsula Health’s annual Take a Break for Cancer fundraiser returns to raise funds for cancer services at Peninsula Health.

“The funds raised help provide essential resources such as comfortable treatment chairs and blanket warmers that make the chemotherapy experience more bearable,” says Cindy.

“By enhancing the overall treatment environment and providing much-needed support, Take a Break for Cancer will significantly improve the quality of life for our patients during their chemotherapy journey.”
