Meet Lexi, Frankston Emergency Department’s dedicated Equipment Coordinator. From managing stock and fixing equipment to making sure our clinicians have everything they need at the bedside, Lexi plays a vital role in keeping the ED running smoothly.
Not only does Lexi keep the ED running, but she also keeps herself moving as a dedicated athlete. Splitting her time between the hospital and the track, Lexi is a current Athletics State Champion and winner of the prestigious 2019 Stawell Gift.
But Lexi’s healthcare and athletics journey didn’t start out quite so smoothly.
“I’m a Registered Nurse, and when I first started at Peninsula Health, I found myself struggling with shift work and bedside nursing. It just wasn’t the right fit for me at the time,” explains Lexi.
“Then an opportunity came up to step into the Equipment Coordinator role, and I’ve absolutely loved it. It’s fast-paced, active and constantly changing, which keeps things interesting, and the schedule works perfectly with my running. There’s no shift work, and my managers have been incredibly supportive of my training, allowing me the flexibility I need to prioritise it when necessary.”
“I don’t think I’d be in the position I’m in with my running and career if it weren’t for the support I’ve received. This past year has been really exciting; I’ve come ahead in leaps and bounds – I feel very lucky.”
Alongside the flexibility, what Lexi values most is the opportunity to give meaningful support back to the ED team.
“I’ve always seen myself as a bit of a fixer, and that’s exactly what this role is about. Whether it’s repairing equipment, solving problems or sourcing what’s needed to help our nurses and doctors, I love being able to step in and make things work,” says Lexi.
“I like being able to make our clinicians’ lives and roles a little easier, because I’ve been on the floor too, and I know how tough it can be – especially in the ED, where the pressure is constant. It means a lot to me that I can do something that eases that load and supports the team.”
As Lexi’s role continues to evolve, she’s excited to see how the ED redevelopment will impact equipment, with new upgrades and improvements that will help enhance health outcomes for patients and the wider community.
