A new chapter in healthcare in Frankston – Peninsula University Hospital officially opened

Peninsula University Hospital has been officially opened, marking a major milestone for public healthcare in Melbourne’s south-east and delivering a new era of care provision for the growing Frankston and Mornington Peninsula community.

The $1.1 billion facility was officially opened by the Premier of Victoria, The Hon Jacinta Allan, and the Minister for Health, The Hon Mary-Anne Thomas. The new hospital, run by Bayside Health’s Peninsula Care Group brings together world-class clinical facilities, contemporary patient-centred design and leading research and education partnerships. It has additional bed capacity, new operating theatres, enhanced mental health and oncology services, as well as expanded maternity and paediatric services. There is also a new main entrance, multi-deck car park and a five-bed emergency department (ED) Mental Health, Alcohol and Other Drugs (AOD) Hub, and a dedicated Paediatric zone in the ED. The new hospital has been designed to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population, while supporting modern models of care across hospital, community and home-based settings.

Peninsula University Hospital is a key part of the Bayside Health network, which spans Melbourne’s southern suburbs, through to the Mornington Peninsula and extending to Koo Wee Rup, Phillip Island, Bass Coast, and southern Gippsland. It was formed from the voluntary merger of Alfred Health, Bass Coast Health, Gippsland Southern Health Service, Kooweerup Regional Health Service and Bayside Health Peninsula on January 1 2026.

Peninsula University Hospital is a model of environmental sustainability, delivering a number of measures to support long-term sustainability.
