The move of patients and consumers into the new Peninsula University Hospital clinical tower is now complete, marking a major milestone for health care in Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula.
Approximately 220 patients and mental health consumers were safely transferred from the former Frankston Hospital into the new 12-storey Peninsula University Hospital clinical tower on Tuesday. The carefully coordinated move was completed smoothly, and ahead of schedule, with continuity of care maintained throughout the day. The move commenced at 7.30am, with both the first surgical procedure and the first birth occurring before 10am.
A baby boy was born at 34 weeks in the new integrated maternity and birthing suite situated on Level 5. Both mother, Bayside Health staff member, Carmen Simpson, and baby are doing well, supported by specialist maternity and neonatal teams in the state-of-the-art facility.
Around an hour earlier, the first surgical procedure was successfully undertaken in the new Level 2 Surgical Suite. The operation was led by the Clinical Director of Surgery, Associate Professor Peter Evans, who guided the theatre team through this first case in the new hospital.
The Peninsula University Hospital is now fully operational. Patients, visitors and staff can access the new Main Entrance via Gate 2 on Yuille Street. The Emergency Department, which has been fully refurbished as part of the redevelopment project, is accessible via Gate 3 on Hastings Road.
Background
The new Peninsula University Hospital delivers modern, purpose-built facilities designed to support high-quality, safe and compassionate care, now and into the future.
Operated by Bayside Health’s Peninsula Care Group, Peninsula University Hospital is the new name for Frankston Hospital. First announced in July 2025, the new name highlights Bayside Health’s strong partnership with Monash University, and an increasing focus on teaching, education and research in the developing hospital precinct.
Peninsula University Hospital has capacity for an additional 130 beds, as well as 15 new surgical theatres, expanded maternity, mental health, oncology and children’s services. A new dedicated paediatrics area and Mental Health/AOD Hub has been included in the refurbished Emergency Department, while the clinical services tower is topped with a new helipad for faster, safer care.
