Sorrento Primary School’s Student Health Ambassadors, with help from Mornington Peninsula Shire (who are leading the project) and Bayside Health, have been getting behind an exciting new idea, The Sorrento Primary School Bike Bus!
A Bike Bus is a group of families who ride to school together along a set route and timetable. Like a regular bus, it can collect “passengers” at agreed stops along the way. It is a fun, active and social way to start the school day.
During a safe paths mapping activity, students identified the routes they thought would be safest and most appealing. Their ideas are now helping bring the bike bus to life!
For physical education teacher William Lewis, the enthusiasm shown by the students has been one of the most exciting parts of the project.
“I’ve been pleasantly surprised by how engaged the Student Health Ambassadors have been in this idea. They’ve taken a genuine interest in helping plan the Bike Bus and have contributed valuable insights about the routes students would feel comfortable using. Their enthusiasm, local knowledge and willingness to get involved have given the school some valuable insights into what could make a Bike Bus work.”
If the Bike Bus takes off next year, it will be something the students can look back on and say they helped make happen.
Good luck with the bike bus Sorrento Primary School. You may just inspire other schools to follow!
