Thriving Together: Supporting Mental Wellbeing in Sporting Clubs

In partnership with the Langwarrin Positive Education Network, the Health Promotion team at Bayside Health Peninsula have been delivering THRIVE training sessions to local sporting clubs with encouraging results.

These sessions have been implemented following feedback from local clubs identifying mental wellbeing as a significant and growing challenge within their settings. Over the past six months, 14 clubs across the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula region have participated in two training rounds, highlighting strong engagement and a clear commitment from clubs to better support mental health and create more positive, supportive environments.

The THRIVE sessions introduce a simple and practical framework designed to help clubs strengthen mental wellbeing and build more connected communities. Grounded in positive psychology, it focuses on six evidence-based actions that support people to feel good, perform at their best, and live well. The framework was initially piloted with great results in community sport and recreation clubs across Frankston and the Mornington Peninsula in 2020 with funding from the South East Melbourne Primary Health Network.

Through the training, clubs are gaining access to easy-to-use resources and interactive learning opportunities that build confidence in supporting mental health, responding to critical incidents, strengthening coaching practices, and enhancing community connection.

Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, with clubs noting that the tools are practical, easy to implement, and address a clear gap in the supports previously available to them.

THRIVE is showing that when clubs prioritise wellbeing, everyone benefits on and off the field. If your club is interested in implementing THRIVE, contact healthpromotion@phcn.vic.gov.au
