Research at Peninsula Health is underpinned by rigorous research ethics and governance structures that ensure the safety of participants, researchers and our community, whilst enabling innovative, relevant exceptional research. Some of these structures are detailed below.
Human Research Ethics Committee
The Peninsula Health Human Research Ethics Committee (HREC) is constituted according to the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (2025). It meets monthly on 10 occasions each year to review and monitor research projects to ensure they conform to the requirements of the National Statement. It receives advice from the Drugs and Therapeutics Committee and Scientific Review Subcommittee in regard to the scientific merit and validity of research proposals.
The role of the HREC is to:
- Ensure that the design and conduct of any human research that it reviews within the scope of its responsibilities conforms with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research 2025 (National Statement) and other relevant national codes of human research ethics and also with the ethical standards to which Peninsula Health is committed.
- Ensure that participants in any human research that the HREC reviews and approves are accorded the respect and protection that is due to them.
- Facilitate and foster human research that is of benefit to Australian communities
- Ensure that any decision it makes complies with relevant Victorian and Australian laws.
