Medial Intern Spotlight – Dr Akshay Soni

You might recognise the friendly face of Dr Akshay Soni.

After moving to Australia from India in 2017 to study science and medicine, Dr Soni’s medical studies brought him to Peninsula Health for his clinical training during the completion of his Doctor of Medicine at Monash University.

This year, Dr Soni returns to Peninsula Health to complete his 12 month medical internship, the final step before working as a clinical doctor. We asked Dr Soni a few questions as he commences his internship year.

Q. What excites you most about completing your medical internship at Peninsula Health?

A. I’m thrilled to be completing my internship at Peninsula Health, having experienced its supportive learning environment during my medical school years. The diversity of cases unique to the Peninsula region offers invaluable opportunities to broaden my clinical knowledge and skills, and I’m excited to contribute to and learn from such a dynamic healthcare environment.

Q. What inspired you to pursue a career in medicine?

A. My passion for problem-solving, combined with an early interest in anatomy during my undergraduate studies, laid the foundation for my medical aspirations. Additionally, I have a strong desire to serve the community and help people during their most vulnerable moments, pursuing a career in medicine became a natural choice.

Q. Do you have any goals for your internship?

A. This year, I aim to develop a strong clinical foundation, gain hands-on experience, and make the most of every rotation. Building meaningful relationships with colleagues and patients is also a priority for me. And on a lighter note, I hope to successfully get through the year relying on only one coffee a day!

Q. What has been the most interesting or surprising thing you’ve learned about working in healthcare here at Peninsula Health?

A. The diversity of both staff members and patients has been truly remarkable. I’ve been especially impressed by how accommodating everyone is in providing personalised, tailored care to meet each patient’s unique needs. This level of inclusivity and attention to detail has been inspiring to witness and be a part of.

Q. How do you see the future of healthcare?

A. The future of healthcare is incredibly exciting, with advancements like AI and robotics poised to revolutionise diagnostics and treatment. Personalised care based on genetic makeup is becoming increasingly viable, and innovations such as organoids derived from stem cells are opening up new possibilities for transplant patients.

Q. What are your hobbies and interests outside of medicine?

A. Outside of medicine I have a passion for languages and am currently learning German on Duolingo, I enjoy playing the guitar and staying active through running and hiking.
