It’s Easter time already. As the Easter school holidays start we wanted to share some fun ideas to help keep the children entertained over the Easter break. So, here you have it, the top five activities you can do with the whole family over the next couple of weeks.
Make Easter Bunny Pikelets
These pikelets are perfect for the kids on Easter morning, they are easy and the whole family will enjoy decorating them! Here’s the recipe.
Ingredients |
To decorate |
1 egg |
Yoghurt |
1 cup self-raising flour |
Blueberries |
1 cup buttermilk |
1 orange (segmented) |
1 tbsp. caster sugar (optional) |
|
2 tbsp. vegetable oil (for cooking) |
|
Method
To make the pikelet batter, combine all ingredients in a medium-sized bowl and whisk until smooth. Set aside for half an hour.
Heat a little of the vegetable oil in a large non-stick saucepan and cook tablespoon-sized dollops of the batter at a time.
To serve, place one pikelet in the centre of a plate, cut another in half and arrange the halves as ears (see photo). Decorate with the yoghurt, blueberries and orange segments.
See the original recipe, here.
Egg Decorating
Decorating real eggs is an Easter classic! To make this child friendly make sure to hard-boil the eggs prior to decorating. Pull out the paints, stickers, jewels and texta’s for this fun Easter activity.
To make coloured eggs try this natural food-based dye technique before decorating:
Simmer beets, blueberries, or other natural ingredients in a cup of water with a dash of vinegar to create the colours. Once dye mix has cooled, add the eggs and leave soaking in the natural dye in the refrigerator overnight for the richest colour; soak just a few minutes for subtler results.
For more information on this food-based dye technique, see here.
Nature Treasure Hunt
Create a nature treasure hunt these school holidays. Make a list of natural items that are easy to find in your area, plus a few that are a little special or tricky. Armed with a list of items to collect and a basket or bag to put the new treasures in, the kids can race around the backyard, campsite or beach to find them.
If you want to get crafty for this one, create something out of the items they find!
Here’s some ideas to put on the list:
- 2 feathers
- 4 different shaped leaves
- 3 different sized sticks
- 6 gumnuts
- 3 different flowers
- Something beginning with B
Easter Bunny Picture Story Book
Get the kids to make their own picture book about the Easter Bunny and maybe write a little story to go along with it. Set them up with a few pieces of paper(fold them in half together to create the pages of the book), some coloured pencils or texta’s and any other craft supplies you want. On each page the kids can draw a new picture or scene in their book. See how creative they get!
Games
Encourage a bit of healthy competition with a few fun games to get the kids active and in the Easter spirit! A few fun ideas are:
- Egg and Spoon Race (remember to hard-boil the eggs first to save the mess!)
- Bunny Hop Sack Race
- Pin the Tail on the Bunny
- Hungry Bunny Toss (see the pic below for this one and here for information on how to recreate it!)
Enjoy the Easter school holidays! We hope this blog inspires you to think of some fun activities to keep the kids entertained! Tag us on Instagram at @a_healthy_peninsula if you do get up to any of these activities!
