Peninsula Health provides inpatient mental health care to aged persons in Aged Acute Mental Health Unit (1 West).
We provided a 24 hour, 7 day a week bed based aged persons mental health inpatient unit. You can access 1 West as either a voluntary person or compulsory patient (under the Victorian Mental Health Act (2014)) for short-term inpatient treatment and care during an acute phase of mental illness.
We offer a high and low dependency areas, allowing us to provide you the right level of care so if you require this level of care to enable your transition back to the community. Our care is person-centred and recovery-oriented.
Our multi-disciplinary team consisting of nursing, medical and allied health staff, provide therapeutic care and behaviour management plans to assist you with ongoing support in the community. We also offer peer support from family members and consumers who have lived experience of mental illness and navigating the mental health service system.
Who we care for
This service is available to people 65 years and older living in the Frankston and Mornington Peninsula Areas. You can access this service if you are in an acute phase of mental illness or struggling with behaviour associated with a formal diagnosis of dementia or related conditions.
You will be eligible to receive the service if you are:
- unable to be safely supported in the community
- choose not to participate in community treatment
- do not have insufficient community supports or
- are unable to be supported under a medical treatment team on another ward

If you are not a current client or patient of Peninsula Health you can contact our Mental Health Telephone Triage to find out more or make a referral.
If you are currently receiving support from a Peninsula Health Mental Health and Wellbeing or General Hospital Service an internal referral can be made on your behalf.
You will need to have a mental health assessment completed in the Emergency Department, General Hospital or via one of our Aged Persons Community Mental Health Teams prior to being admitted to 1W.
