Information for Private Patients

Using your private health insurance at Peninsula Health

Public or Private – it’s your choice

If you have private health insurance you can choose to be treated as a private patient.
All patients receive the same excellent quality of treatment and range of services.

As a private patient, you will receive

  • no out of pocket medical expenses
  • we waive your hospital excess applicable to your admission
  • your own Private Patient Liaison Officer to make your hospital stay as smooth as possible.

Plus you’ll benefit from

  • world-class medical and specialist care
  • the Peninsula’s most comprehensive range of specialist services
  • complete care from admission to hospital, through to rehabilitation and access to our home-based care to help you recover faster
  • access to a range of specialist outpatient clinics so you can continue your rehab once you’ve returned home
  • interdisciplinary teams work with you to help you recover faster and return home sooner.

What’s covered?

Depending on your level of cover, your private health insurance will typically cover:

  • your hospital accommodation
  • prosthetics
  • specialist and surgical costs
  • anaesthetic costs
  • pathology and medical imaging costs.

If you are unsure about your level of cover, our friendly Private Patient Liaison Officers can work with your health fund to get the right information.

What’s not covered?

You may have to pay for the prescription medicines that you take home with you and some medicines prescribed during day-only admissions, or for aids such as crutches – but you would have to pay these anyway, even if you don’t use your private health insurance.

Patients choosing to be transferred to a private hospital are responsible for any out of pocket transport costs charged by the other hospital.

Why do we encourage our patients to use their private health insurance?

You pay for your private health insurance and are entitled to use it to be treated as a private patient for any hospital admission.

Your decision to be admitted as a private patient allows us to bill your health fund. This is an important source of revenue that goes directly to our hospital. We could not deliver our current level of services without this type of support.

Your Private Patient Liaison Officer

Our Private Patient Liaison Officers are here to make your hospital stay as easy as possible.

They will:

  • help you or your family complete all of the necessary paperwork
  • speak to your health fund to understand what you’re entitled to
  • make sure you have everything you need during your stay with us, so there’s a minimum of fuss.
