HESTA Awards Winner – Congratulations Cathy Halmarick

Massive congratulations to Cathy Halmarick who was announced as the winner of this year’s HESTA’s Nurse of the Year Awards!

Cathy Halmarick is a nurse and midwife specialising in sexual and reproductive health for women and people with a cervix.

“I am so thrilled to have received this award, which is certainly a significant milestone in my career,” says Cathy.

“The awards ceremony not only celebrates individual achievements but also highlights the crucial roles and contributions of nurses and midwives across Australia.”

“I am honoured to have been presented with this prestigious award.”

For over 25 years, Cathy has been responsible for developing and expanding programs for sexual and reproductive healthcare. In 2017 Cathy helped establish the Sexual and Reproductive Health Hub in Southeastern Victoria. During the challenging COVID-19 pandemic, she ensured the community could continue to access sexual health services including medical terminations and contraceptives.

Through her work, Cathy identified that many women were finding the Intra Uterine Device (IUD) process painful. She initiated the use of a ‘green whistle’ to reduce women’s pain experience with excellent results.

In 2023, Cathy was shortlisted for the Values Award in the ‘Be the Best’ category for her unwavering commitment to improving women’s sexual and reproductive services. She has enhanced service capability through her professional development, facilitated specialist training for Peninsula Health staff, and mentored numerous students and clinicians across disciplines.

HESTA Award Winners were revealed at an Awards ceremony in Melbourne in May 2024.
