Each day presents a unique set of challenges and opportunities for Peninsula Health paediatrician Dr Simon Stokes. From nurturing infants in their earliest days to guiding teenagers through their healthcare journeys, Dr Stokes embodies an unwavering commitment to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
“A typical shift for me involves overseeing busy clinics in general paediatrics and developmental medicine, as well as caring for sick children as inpatients on the child and adolescent ward and in the special care nursery,” explains Dr Stokes.
Beginning his career at Peninsula Health as a rotating registrar, he was drawn to continue working in paediatrics on the Peninsula through the school outreach clinics, where he began working with families in the community. However, paediatrics wasn’t always on the cards for Dr Stokes.
“I had always seen myself in health sciences, so I almost enrolled in physiotherapy,” reflects Dr Stokes. “It wasn’t until I was in medical school that I started having an inkling towards working with children and families.”
“It’s the element of fun in paediatrics that I really enjoy – engaging children from the moment I walk into the room with excitement and curiosity often helps them to warm up and eases some of the anxieties of attending the hospital.”
A significant aspect of Dr Stokes’ role is dedicated to supporting paediatric trainees.
“As a consultant, it’s essential we provide training for junior medical staff – providing oversight to trainees on the ground with guided decision-making and hands-on assistance is a big part of the job.”
“The paediatric department, in particular, is an incredibly supportive environment to work within. It makes such a difference to have great colleagues and support staff from every discipline to work with every day.”
