Infection control in the pandemic is everyone’s business

‘Director of Happiness’ Kenzo has been redeployed in the Infection Prevention and Control team during the pandemic.

The Infection Prevention and Control team is at the heart of Peninsula Health’s response to Covid-19, educating and providing staff with the tools to keep themselves, their patients and our community safe.

A major focus for the team is making sure employees across the health service know how to correctly use personal protective equipment (PPE) and how to take appropriate hand hygiene precautions.

As health authorities began implementing restrictions across the country, the Infection Prevention and Control team were busy producing a series of videos to explain to frontline healthcare workers how to correctly don and doff PPE.

Infection Prevention and Control Manager Giulietta Pontivivo says the videos were particularly important for staff who could come into contact with Covid-19 positive patients.

“It was a really intense ten to eleven weeks for us. We had to stay vigilant to make sure we were protecting every person who interacts with the health service,” says Giulietta.

“The pleasing aspect for us was seeing so many of our staff do the right thing, watching the videos and completing their online training.”

With a greater awareness and focus on hand hygiene, another key focus for Infection Prevention and Control has been coordinating the roll out of a new hand rub across the organisation.

“We’ve moved towards a foam during this time, which is much gentler and kinder for your skin,” says Giulietta.

“We’re in a safe and secure state with our supply of alcohol-based handrub and other hand hygiene products.”

As restrictions remain in place, it is important to remain vigilant and follow the health care guidelines, including physical distancing.
