Faces of Peninsula Health – Meet Jane Roberts

Jane RobertsWhen Jane Roberts joined Peninsula Health 13 years ago, she was working as a physiotherapist in the Rehabilitation Unit. Fast forward to 2019 and Jane is the Operations Director of Medicine, where she manages more than 160 beds at Frankston Hospital.

Jane took on a number of leadership roles after joining Peninsula Health, which led to her appointment as Operations Director – Sub Acute.

“At the time I was the first non-nurse at Peninsula Health in the role,” says Jane. “It was a bit unusual then but it’s a lot more common now for people with different backgrounds to have this position.”

After three years managing Sub Acute, Jane made the move to her current role Operations Director – Medicine.

“What you do in a day is never what you expect to do – you have to be adaptable and flexible,” she says.

“I start the day with the huddles (stand up meetings in each area),  and get out and about to all of my areas to see what is going on and if there are any minor issues that need to be dealt with.”

Jane initially hoped to pursue a career in sports medicine, until she started her physiotherapy degree.

“When I was at school I had an interest in science and sport, it just seemed like a logical mix,” she explains.

“I thought I would go into sports medicine but once I started the degree I realised my interests laid elsewhere. I was exposed to a much greater variety of options and chose to work in hospitals.”

Jane begun her career at The Austin, where she looked after patients with spinal injuries.

“It was a steep learning curve, but I did enjoy working with these patients.”

She then went on to complete a post-graduate degree at Melbourne University in muscular-skeletal physiotherapy, before becoming a Mum of two boys who are now teenagers.

Jane still loves sport, and spends much of her time outside of work being an avid spectator.

“My passions are watching my boys play sport and supporting Richmond Football Club – we are very happy with the 2017 premiership!”
