Being a midwife comes with the privilege to be part of the most special moments in people’s lives

Helping women give birth is a special experience and one that sometimes brings tears of joy for graduate midwife Bernadette Pulis.

“The thing I love most about being a midwife is when parents see their baby for the first time after they’re born – it’s honestly such a privilege to be part of that incredible moment,” says Bernadette, who has helped delivered more than 30 babies over the last 18 months.

After initially being unsure about what career she wanted to pursue while in High School, Bernadette has found her niche in caring for others, completing her graduate nurse year at Peninsula Health in 2015 before continuing on to complete her post-graduate diploma in midwifery.

The Head Trainer at Bonbeach Life Saving Club has come a long way since her first delivery.

“I had no idea what I was doing. I was learning from the midwife how to speak to my patient, how to coach her through breathing while she was pushing and that worked really well. I had to learn how to position my hands properly too,” recalls Bernadette.

“It was great working hands-on with the midwife when I was doing that first birth. The woman had a baby girl and she started crying and then I cried in that one.”

The 23-year-old’s role on the Women’s Health Unit spans further than the delivery room.

“I love the versatility of being on the ward and being able to do different things every day, every shift.”

She may be looking after antenatal patients, working in outpatients or in the post-natal section, helping women with breast-feeding issues.

“It’s a very rewarding career in the Women’s Health Unit,” says Bernadette.

“You can expect challenging days, but also really rewarding days as well. We cover a big area on the Peninsula, so we see a variety of people from first-time Mums to Mums coming back for the second or third time.”

“The opportunities Peninsula Health has given me have been just outstanding.”

Peninsula Health is currently looking for passionate and dedicated registered midwives to join Bernadette and the Women’s Health Unit Team.
