Achieve peace of mind for you and your family

“It’s important not to put your children through having to decide what happens to you,” says Warren Denholm.

The 65-year-old Mornington resident has been working with Peninsula Health to put in place an Advance Care Plan.

Advance Care Planning is a way of planning for your future healthcare needs by deciding and documenting what is important for you. If you become too unwell to speak for yourself, your loved ones and the health professionals caring for you will have a plan for making the decisions that are right for you.

“I wanted to make the choices that suit me but also help my family not to have to worry about – ‘Do we pull the plug? Does he want to live like this’? All that sort of thing,” explains Warren.

“It was easy to put an Advance Care Plan in place with the assistance of Kerry Shepherd from Peninsula Health who was just wonderful, 10/10!”

Warren, who recently became a great-grandfather, has discussed his wishes with his brothers and his daughter. He encourages others to talk to their family about their needs and wants and to take the step to complete an Advance Care Plan.

“Parents and kids need to actually talk to each other about what’s going to happen when the time comes,” says Warren.

“If my daughter ever has to make that decision she will have the instructions on what to do, so she won’t hesitate or feel guilty.”

Completing an Advance Care Plan has given Warren peace of mind to enjoy life and spend time reading and listening to music, knowing that if something does happen to him, everything is in order.

You can complete your own Advance Care Plan online, or with the assistance of Peninsula Health staff by calling 1300 665 781.
