Peninsula Health’s ambitious $15 million Academic Centre is a step closer to being realised following the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Monash University.

Under the MoU both parties have agreed to contribute funds to the establishment of the Academic Centre.

The leading-edge academic development will be a shared facility to accommodate professional development for Peninsula Health clinical staff, teaching of Monash University health professional students as well as expanded joint research activities.

Located adjacent to the simulation centre and the existing teaching rooms on the Frankston Hospital campus, the Centre will include learning spaces, library and dedicated research space as well as state of the art technology.

Peninsula Health will contribute approximately $8 million from the sale of its Mount Eliza Centre, and Monash University is expected to provide the remaining $7 million.

“The new Academic Centre will position Peninsula Health as the premier academic and health research facility for the region, with a leadership profile in chronic disease management and care of the elderly”, said Peninsula Health CEO, Ms Sue Williams.

Professor Christina Mitchell, Academic Vice-President and Dean, Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences at Monash University, said the Centre will accommodate new clinical academic groups conducting research into important age-related health issues such as dementia, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes.

“It will provide a stimulating venue for interactions between researchers, clinicians and students, and set the scene for developing translational research designed to improve health care for the Peninsula community,” Professor Mitchell said.

The MoU confirms the strong partnership between Monash University and Peninsula Health and a shared vision of training the next generation of clinicians.
