About Peninsula Palliative Care Unit
Opened in January 2001, the unit has 15 beds with 13 single rooms and one double room. All of the rooms have a pleasant outlook. Visitors are welcome at any time and may stay with the patient overnight if desired.
The aim of the inpatient unit is to ensure symptom management at all stages of illness, comfort and dignity in the final stages and to provide support to the patient’s family and carers.
The Palliative Care Unit team includes specialist nurses, pastoral care counselors, social worker/counsellor and medical support to provide:
- specialist support of patients, families and carers
- symptom management needs of palliative patients
- liaison with community palliative care services as part of discharge planning
- support and advocacy in discussions regarding treatment choices in potentially life threatening situations
