About Medical Imaging/Radiology

The Radiology Department provides a comprehensive service including Radiography, Ultrasound with Doppler, Digital Fluoroscopy, Multi-slice Computed Tomography (MSCT), Nuclear Medicine, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Interventional Radiology.

A significant amount of the Department’s workload is in supporting the Emergency Department, surgical imaging, and musculoskeletal, oncological and neurological services but it covers all facets of modern medical practice.

Every month the Radiology Department performs an average of 7,000 tests and procedures – 950 CT scans; 850 ultrasounds and 4300 x-rays. Added to these numbers are videofluoroscopy, digital subtraction angioplasty, MRIs, nuclear medicine scans and other tests.

Cardiac Angiography is currently colocated in Frankston Hospital’s Radiology Department as decant works for the new Stage 2A project are underway. Angiography is a shared facility between Cardiac Angiography and Digital Subtraction Angiography.

From September 2008, images from x-rays and scan are available immediately on TV monitors that have been installed in all Theatre areas, Day Surgery, Endoscopy and in the resuscitation areas of the Emergency Department. The Picture Archieving and Communication System (PACS) means that no time is wasted waiting for films to be processed and reported before the images can be viewed on the ward. For patients this means less waiting time for results and faster patient treatment response and discharge times.
