The Peninsula Health Physiotherapy Service seeks to promote restoration and maintenance of independence and optimal function for people of all ages. Specialist assessment and interventions assist in attainment of client centred goals within a whole of team approach.
Achievement of optimal physical fitness is a common thread throughout Physiotherapy treatment programs.
A wide spectrum of evidence based, best practice approaches are used within our state-of-the-art facilities to achieve these goals.
A wide spectrum of assessment and treatment approaches can be used, depending on the goal of treatment. Some examples are breathing and walking exercise programs, muscle strengthening and stretching exercises, pool-based exercise, neck and low back programs and re-learning of essential components of the walking cycle.
The Peninsula Health Physiotherapy Department comprises 65EFT and 102 staff members spread over seven sites and three home based services.
The Physiotherapy Department is a growing and vibrant team who aim to provide best practice care to all clients and provide a supportive environment for all staff.
The Physiotherapy Service maintains a commitment to the maintenance of a Professional Development record by all staff. Ongoing development is encouraged through internal inservice programs and support for targeted attendance at external courses and seminars.
Learning plans are established for all staff through an annual performance appraisal process. Rotating staff are further supported by a carefully structured, three stage appraisal / feedback process within each rotation with attention paid to individual learning styles and specific rotational objectives.
Specialist clinical streams in Cardiothoracic, Musculoskeletal, Neurology, Aged Care and Aquatic Physiotherapy provide structured inservice offerings to staff in addition to site specific journal clubs. The streams cover all areas of physiotherapy within Peninsula Health. Each stream conducts bi-monthly inservices to members of the stream and all other interested staff. A bi-monthly service wide physiotherapy inservice is also conducted to tackle issues that are relevant to all physiotherapists.
The Peninsula Health Physiotherapy Department is a designated Monash University clinical school, providing acclaimed clinical placements for Physiotherapy Students. Department staff are trained to provide high quality clinical education, supervision and feedback.
The Peninsula Health Physiotherapy Department prides itself on educating and supporting our physiotherapists across a wide variety of Grade 1 rotations to develop well rounded and experienced physiotherapists.
Rotations are 4 months duration, with the exception of the 6 month RAD team rotation.

Peninsula Health, as a clinical school for Monash University physiotherapy, is committed to providing quality clinical education to 64 undergraduate Monash University students each year. All students undertake acute and subacute rotations in cardiothoracic, musculoskeletal and neurology in 3rd and 4th year under the guidance of specialist clinicians. Students also have the opportunity to participate in a diverse range of interdisciplinary tutorials by clinical experts. Elective clinical placements in hydrotherapy, paediatrics, advanced musculoskeletal, women’s health, aged care and community health are also offered.
Best practice in clinical education is promoted, with a commitment to professional development of the physiotherapy department in education theory, to provide an active and supportive learning environment for undergraduate students.
The Peninsula Health Physiotherapy Service comprises more than 100 staff spread over seven sites and threehome based programs. Services are provided to Acute, Community Health, Rehabilitation, Aged Care, Palliative Care and Residential clusters.
The Physiotherapy Department is lead by a Director of Physiotherapy, who is supported by a Deputy Director. Senior Clinicians at each site comprise the Senior Advisory Group.
There are Clinical Experts (Grade 4) within the Emergency Department and Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic.
