Peninsula Health has a strong commitment to servicing patients from a culturally and linguistically diverse background.
Approximately 10% of our patients were born in a country other than Australia. For this reason Peninsula Health provides an Interpreter Booking Service which is available to all patients.
A centralised interpreter booking service was established in 2001. This service has resulted in an increased use of interpreters across Peninsula Health and provided a better understanding of the language needs of our community.
The top six languages requested at Peninsula Health are:
In February 2003, Peninsula Health was awarded $26,700 as part of the Language Services Strategy. This strategy funds public hospitals to provide cross-cultural and interpreter training for staff.
Cross-cultural training sessions have been held at Frankston Hospital, Mt Eliza Centre, Golf Links Road site and Rosebud Hospital.
The Peninsula Health Interpreter Booking service is coordinated by the Social Work Department at Frankston Hospital. Interpreters are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, either for on-site or telephone interpreting for all sites of Peninsula Health.
If you are a patient at one of Peninsula Health’s sites and require an interpreter please speak to your ward/unit manager about our free interpreter service.
Staff can book an interpreter during business hours by calling 9784 7073. There is no cost to individual wards/units if an interpreter is booked through this service.
If an interpreter is required after hours, contact 'On Call Interpreters' directly on 9867 3788. You must notify the Social Work Department on 7073 by the next business day, or the interpreting will be charged to your unit.
