REFERRAL TO THE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT

When referring to ED, phone calls to the admitting officer and referral letters with an accurate medication list and copies of test results are very helpful.

  • The guidelines are a joint initiative between the Victorian state wide burns services at The Alfred hospital and Royal Children’s Hospital which aims to provide a more consistent standard of burns management, particularly in the early stages post injury, in order to improve outcomes for those who are injured. The guidelines are based on evidence where available and consensus expert opinion.

The aim of these guidelines is to provide direction to health care professionals caring for adults or children with burn injuries in the primary care setting in Victoria. This includes emergency department staff, general practitioners, physicians, general surgeons, nurses and paramedics.

    The guidelines include:

    • Transfer criteria
    • Initial management of patients with severe burn injuries
    • Burns assessment
    • Management of patients with a minor burn injury

Some conditions which in the past have been managed by referral to ED can be managed using other Peninsula Health services minimising waiting times and disruption for your patients. See below…

    • Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

Most patients who present with DVT to the Emergency Department are not admitted into a Frankston hospital bed but are managed at home by Hospital-In-The-Home (HITH) or their GP.  Read on to find out more…

    • Referral to HITH

Common conditions referred to HITH are cellulitis, DVTs, infections, complex dressings and patients requiring subcutaneous transfusions. Other individual cases can be considered after discussion.
