Stage 2A Expansion Overview
The Stage 2A redevelopment of Frankston Hospital will provide over 6,000 square metres of new and redeveloped areas, which include:
- Two additional surgical theatres
- Refurbishment of existing 4 theatres
- New surgical reception/waiting area
- New Endoscopy facilities
- New Day Surgery facilities
- Expanded Central Sterilising Supply Department
- New centralised 33 bed & 7 chair recovery suite
- New 13 bed Intensive Care Unit
- New Cardiac Angiography facilities
- New Pharmacy
- New education facilities & staff accommodation; and
- New Health Information Services Department.
The project will take three years to complete and is a significant milestone in the continuing development of health services on the Mornington Peninsula.
The development of the two new surgical theatres will help to reduce the waiting list for Category 2 and 3 patients waiting for elective surgery.
When this next phase in the expansion of Frankston Hospital is opened, Peninsula Health will have surgical and critical care facilities that compare with the best in Victoria.
The redevelopment will boost the hospital’s capacity to meet the demands of the growing population on the Peninsula by enhancing existing facilities and developing more services to cater for future health needs.
Background
The completion of the Frankston Hospital Stage 1 redevelopment in 2002, delivered a new 60-bed general adult ward (including 14 coronary care beds); a new 15-place Observation Ward for the Emergency Department; new integrated maternity facilities (19 gynaecology and post natal beds; birthing suite of 8 delivery rooms; 13 cot special care nursery); and a new 17-bed paediatric unit.
Capital funding of $45m was provided in the 2007/08 State Budget for the Frankston Hospital Stage 2A Redevelopment Project.
The Stage 2A redevelopment of the Frankston Hospital will enable the hospital to further enhance the improved and expanded facilities and services developed under Stage 1.

A ‘Green’ Expansion
The expansion will have many environmentally-friendly design aspects.
Project architects, in consultation with Peninsula Health, have developed an Environmentally Sustainable Design for the expansion Frankston Hospital.
Key components of the Environmentally Sustainable Design include:
- The use of water-efficient plumbing in ensuites and toilets.
- The installation of water tanks for use in flushing toilets.
- The use of double-glazed windows, predominantly on the west side of the building. This reduces the amount of heat entering the building and therefore the amount of energy required for cooling.
- The installation of a solar pre-heat hot water service; and
- The use of high-energy, heat reflective material for the new building facade.
Community Involvement
Peninsula Health is committed to the involvement of consumers and community in the planning and delivery of large scale capital projects.
The Frankston/Northern Community Advisory Group will act as an information conduit between the community and Peninsula Health regarding the Frankston Stage 2 project.
