Consumer participation is an important means of improving care and ensuring that it is appropriate to the needs of the individual and, where relevant, families and carers.
At Peninsula Health, consumers are encouraged to be involved in the planning of their own care or that of a loved one. Consumer representatives are actively involved in monitoring the delivery of services and in planning future services.
Consumers are represented at the highest level on Board committees, including the Community Advisory Committee, the Quality and Clinical Governance Committee and the Research and Ethics Committee as well as via a number of Community Advisory Groups (CAGs). These CAGs represent both geographic and specific needs communities.
Peninsula Health also consults on a regular basis with representatives of groups with special needs and with other organisations providing health care services.
Types of participation include information giving and receiving, consultation, partnership, delegation and control.
The underlying principals of participation include trust, respect, openess, equal opportunity, advocacy and support, responsiveness, shared ownership and accountability, dissemmination and evaluation.
