New ward for surgery patients

Builders and tradesmen are putting the finishing touches on a new 12 bed ward for elective surgery patients at Frankston Hospital.

“The additional 12 beds and two recovery chairs means we will be able to care for more people in a more timely manner,” Peninsula Health’s Director of Surgery Mr Bob Spychal said.

The new ward, which will open in February 2010, is located adjacent to the Emergency Department.

“This new ward is primarily designed for patients who require a low level of complex care and a short length of stay following surgery,” Mr Spychal said.

“The additional beds will be designated for planned surgical procedures but will also be available on weekends, if required, for emergency surgery patients.

“We are committed to reducing the time some people need to wait for elective surgery,” Mr Spychal said.

“This new ward, and the four new theatres being built as part of the hospital’s $45million Stage 2A redevelopment project, will assist us in reaching this goal.”

In the 2007/08 financial year 4,754 elective operations and 3,631 emergency operations were performed at Peninsula Health.
